The “bratosphere” is expanding as singer-songwriter Charli XCX explores new opportunities that transcend her current neon-green fixation. According to a New York cover story, Charli XCX reportedly traveled to Poland in August to work on a forthcoming film with playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris.
“She wants to branch out into acting, she says, and will make a ‘pretty unrecognizable’ appearance in the remake of the ’70s slasher flick “Faces of Death,” per the director, which is planned to be released next year,” New York feature writer Brock Colyar said in the article.
“Brat,” Charli XCX’s critically acclaimed sixth studio record, has skyrocketed her into the public eye, garnering a summer of smudged eyeliner, grungy street style and party-girl ataxia.
Her edgy pop tunes are painfully relatable — the lyric “I think the apple's rotten right to the core, from all the things passed down, from all the apples coming before” from her hit song “Apple” references familial trauma and the issues accompanying it.
“Apple” has amassed a whopping 1.5 million videos on TikTok as users have created a dance to follow the song. Celebrities ranging from childhood star Brooke Shields to Twister stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos have participated in the trend, finding its way into every corner of social media.
Partying is a staple of this mantra, and Charli XCX has been doing that reputation justice this summer.
“I’m partying all the time,” Charli XCX said in the interview with New York. “Everyone is always like, ‘Charli, now maybe is the time to leave it alone?’ I’m like, ‘Why?’ I’m messy. I’m messy. I’m also really not the girl who leaves at a chic hour.”
To live the last couple weeks of brat summer to the fullest, dressing the part is a necessity. The Y2K-inspired aesthetic combines grunge with party girl, making half-smoked cigarettes and BIC lighters the hottest closet staple.
Letting the bra straps show only adds to the “brat” aura. The “clean girl” fad has officially passed.
Fashion isn’t the only thing that contributes to this lifestyle. Being untruthful for fun falls into the “brat” category.
“Lying is so fun, so brat,” Charli XCX said in the New York interview. “Who made this rule that you have to be truthful and honest in the press as an artist? The press is just a tool.”
Self-acclaimed “brats” and brats-to-be can be sure to look forward to Charli XCX’s newest viral takeover.
“I’m very well aware that you can’t be omnipresent forever,” Charli XCX said in the New York interview. “This is a ‘sit back and watch it burn’ situation for me.”
