The term coquette has not always been associated with Lana Del Rey and pink bows.

The term, originally affiliated with having a flirtatious nature, has shifted from pleasing men to embracing femininity, but romantic hues such as pink and red remain staples of this trend, drawing inspiration from the historical definition. Coquette has evolved tremendously and TikTok has played a big part in that.

In recent years, both TikTok and Pinterest have become well-known for their influence in the fashion world and have been setting the agenda for what is trending. In recent months the coquette aesthetic – a hyperfeminine girly aesthetic with themes of youthfulness and lots of bows – has made its mark on the fashion world. This aesthetic encourages the romanticization of daily activities, embracing dreamy silhouettes and amorous elegance.

Pop star Olivia Rodrigo has fully adopted this aesthetic, sporting the trend to the premiere of her documentary “Driving Home 2 U.” This coquette look (pictured above) consists of multiple pink bows and an underlying regency tone with the corset top and black gloves.

In typical Rodrigo fashion, this outfit has an edginess that most coquette looks don’t have. With black platform shoes, sheer black socks and an ultra mini pink skirt Rodrigo was able to flawlessly pull off this trend at the premiere.

The trend is easily replicated with bows, light pink, lace, heart prints and pearls.  These elements further complement the foundational flirtatious themes of the coquette trend.

TikTok users created their own trend surrounding coquette. Users have been posting videos of pink bows tied around random objects in an attempt to romanticize daily activities.

If you want to partake in the trend on social media you can put the bow on virtually anything; a car, your house, a pen, a soccer ball, really anything you can think of that needs a little coquette love – bonus points if a Del Rey song is in the background.

If you are looking for a classic way to wear the trend, using light pink bows in your hair is the most popular way.

To wear the trend not just in your hair, you can wear flowy or silk light pink clothing with lacey white socks and Mary Janes.

Another way to style a coquette look is by wearing floral dresses with pink cardigans and ballet flats.

The key to embracing this viral trend is lots and lots of pinks, and you can never have too many bows.
