Fashion is in every aspect of culture, especially in music. Music, like fashion, is an art form of self expression, and the two frequently intertwine. All art carries some form of culture to it, and the culture behind each music genre allows for different forms of creative expression; which translates into the fashion behind a specific genre of music.
So, what are the differences between pop and R&B? According to IntoneMusic and MDLBEAST, pop music is much more commercialized than other genres of music. It takes from multiple genres and styles of music. The fashion displayed amongst pop artists reflects what's popular within culture and in other ways defines what is popular.
R&B music, according to MasterClass and Queen’s Fashion Industry Network, is a musical genre that stands for rhythm and blues. It was created by African Americans in the 1940s, derived from gospel, jazz, folk and traditional blues. Fashion from R&B artists tends to take from African American street wear, showcasing pure individuality.

Sabrina Carpenter during her recent tour, “Short N’ Sweet”, used a wardrobe made up of a mixture of fun and flirty outfits—incredibly indicative of the more feminine-presenting styles in popular culture today.

In contrast, SZA’s wardrobe during Kendrick Lamar’s “Grand National Tour” is reflective of early 2000s streetwear styles, highlighting the culture that R&B is based upon.

The Weeknd has become known for his different looks that not only represent his albums, but also create iconic moments in popular culture. He combines flashy with formal wear, while also utilizing props like artificial blood.

Kehlani’s choice of fashion consists of a mixture of streetwear, while also bringing in unique elements; pairing together traditionally male-presenting clothing with feminine accents. This perfectly showcases the individuality that is brought out through the R&B genre.
Fashion is an art form, and it can be brought out through many different styles, especially through music. Both R&B and pop, although different in terms of the cultural significance behind them, demonstrate self-expression through fashion and appearance.
